Adream Project’s Global Link Initiative

November 2003 saw the successful Launch of the Adream Project. Part funded by Peace ll the Project has at its core the ambition to build digital bridges between the Young people of Northern Ireland. The primary legacy of the conflict here has been a breakdown in communication between our people; particularly our young people. Meeting other young people across the religious divide in the real world was rendered more difficult owing to the conflict; meeting in a virtual world was perhaps part of the solution. To this end we created an Internet 'platform' where every school in Northern Ireland had a website on which to showcase innovation and creativity online. Such was the power and potential reach of this virtual environment we never doubted the ambition to “Go Global”.

From January 21st to 31st ,Adream Consultant Marie Nancarrow will be visiting Kenya as part of our Global Link program. Her aim is to link schools from Northern Ireland with schools throughout Kenya. Marie will be working in Kenya with people with whom we have developed a close relationship with over the past year.

She will be essentially 'training the trainers' in the use of the “Adream” system in order that art, literature, drama and music from Kenya can be shared on line with schools not only in Northern Ireland but all over the world.

Marie will be staying in Mombasa with Dekha Ibrahim Abdi a founding member of Wajir Peace and Development Committee: (WPDC) and representative internationally of Coalition for Peace in Africa: (COPA). Recent collaboration between government and community in peace building initiatives has made it possible for programs, like this, to develop. Members (mostly teachers) of the Peace Education Network: (PEN), from all over Kenya will attend workshops in Mombasa run by Marie Nancarrow and facilitated by Dekha Ibrahim and Khamisi Kaseu (COPA).

In line with the objectives the major PEN activities conducted by WPDC under the schools PEN programme (with particular relevance to our visit) include:-

The establishment and formation of peace clubs in schools. To date there are twenty one peace clubs with 735 members in twenty one primary schools (central division) and eight peace clubs with 280 members in eight secondary schools in the district.

Synchronizing the peace education programme to the existing mainstream school curriculum. Provision of advisory and material support to peace clubs.
Training of head teachers, peace club patrons, officials and school prefects on conflict resolution techniques.
Training of teachers and students on drama aimed at peace education.
Development of peace sensitive plays/drama, poems and songs. Co-ordination and networking of peace education programme. For effective implementation of peace education, there is need for adequate.

networking among various schools and other stakeholders of peace.

By training teachers in both the technical application of Adream and engaging them in the spirit of cooperation, we hope to span digital bridges and cultural differences which exist in both our regions.
